What is difference between company and firm?

Not to be confused with a firm, a company is a business that sells goods and/or services for profit and includes all business structures and trades. A business firm has one or more locations which all have the same ownership and report under the same EIN.

Why is a company called a firm?

It is believed to have come from the German Firma meaning 'a business, name of a business,' which came from the Italian word Firma, meaning 'signature' and Firmare 'to sign'. In early Latin, Firmare meant 'to make firm, affirm' and then in Late Latin had the added meaning of 'confirm (by signature)'.
